Remodeling the May Building Annex

May Building with annex remodeling in progress

When Tasso Katselas designed the annex to the May Building (which was designed by Charles Bickel), modernism was not just fashion—it was dogma. Fashions have changed and dogmas have relaxed, and the annex is being remodeled to be less aggressively different from the original building. We’ll have more pictures as the remodeling takes shape.

We should be glad that the US does not suffer from European regulations which, by requiring additions to historic buildings to be notably different from the original section, create jarring, confusing streetscapes that preserve the structure, but ruin the setting by surrounding Victorian brickwork with irregular masses of steel and glass.
