Three of our greatest Art Deco buildings are lined up in a row on Grant Street: the Koppers Tower, the Gulf Tower, and this magnificent deco-fascist composition by the Cleveland architects Walker and Weeks. This image is put together from six separate photographs, so it is huge if you click on it; there are some small stitching errors, but overall it looks very much like the architects’ original rendering.

What do you suppose the intertwined 4 and the D are on the building?
D4 is the designation of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, of which the Pittsburgh office is a branch. “Decoding a One Dollar Bill” explains many interesing things about our currency, and will have you poring over the money in your wallet for a few minutes at least.
Federal Reserve district 4. And if you look at a bill issued by the Cleveland FED you will see The D in a small seal.
Thank you Dr. Boli and Mr. Gill. Money is fascinating in more ways than one.
