Why should the beautiful die?
This little out-of-the-way park on a steep knob overlooking the West End Valley has one of Pittsburgh’s least-known memorials by one of Pittsburgh’s best-known sculptors. Frank Vittor, creator of some of our most prominent public art, designed this memorial for the soldiers who fought in the First World War.

I was about 10 years old, bored and needed something to do. We lived at the bottom of Walbridge on S. Main Street, West End. We decided to go to the park, accepted the challenge of walking up Walbridge. I had been to the park many times. This time, out of boredom I decided to get up on the ridge of the memorial statue and walk around it. Didn’t work out so well. There was not enough ridge to give me a foothold and I soon came down and cracked my forehead open. I went home with blood seeping down my head looking for care and comfort from my mother. She took one look and said “You’ll be alright” Get a bandaid .
