Father Pitt

Why should the beautiful die?

Crescent Apartments

This is almost unique in Pittsburgh: an apartment building that curves into a crescent shape to follow the curve in the street. It is deliberately given a Georgian look to remind us of the crescents in London. Old Pa Pitt has not been able to determine an architect yet; the complex was built for James A. Wilson in 1903. In 2011 it was restored under the supervision of Landmarks Design Associates.

When I think of crescent-shaped buildings in the UK, it’s Bath that comes to mind first.

    1. That is probably the most magnificent crescent in England. There are many others, however, and the one old Pa Pitt had in mind in particular is right by Tower Hill Station in the City. It’s just called “the Crescent,” and you can see it on Google Street View. The resemblance to the Crescent Apartments will be obvious.
